A Journey Home: How Astro the Cat Found His Forever Family

Sometimes pets find their way home in unexpected ways.

Astro, affectionately known as “Little” or “Wittle” by his new family, did not start his journey in the home where he now lives. Originally belonging to a family in a nearby town, Astro had a habit of slipping out and exploring farther each time. His adventures eventually took him across the bridge into the next town, far from his original home.

The Search Begins

Local Facebook groups often shared posts about a cat matching Astro’s description wandering around town. His new owner saw these posts multiple times. When she saw Astro posted again, she decided to step in and bring him home.

This time, Astro was ready to stay. When she picked him up, it was clear he needed care and attention.

Caring for Astro’s Health

Astro arrived thinner than expected, with long fur that needed grooming. His new family began brushing him regularly to remove tangles and keep his coat healthy. During this process, they found a few fleas and treated him immediately.

A visit to the veterinarian revealed ear mites, a common problem for outdoor cats. Treatment helped relieve his discomfort and improved his overall well-being.

Because veterinary care can be expensive, the Somerset Pet Welfare Alliance helped cover the cost of Astro’s neuter surgery. This support made it possible for his new family to provide the care he needed without financial stress.

Why Neutering Matters

Astro had a history of escaping and wandering far from home. This behavior is very common in unneutered male cats. Intact males are driven by hormones to roam in search of females, which can lead them to travel long distances, cross roads, and get into fights with other animals.

Neutering helps reduce these hormone-driven behaviors. Once a male cat is neutered, testosterone levels drop, which often leads to:

Less roaming and escapingReduced fighting with other catsLower risk of injuries and infectionsReduced spraying and marking behavior

While neutering doesn’t change a cat’s personality, it can make them safer, calmer, and more likely to stay closer to home.

Thanks to the support available through Somerset Pet Welfare Alliance, Astro was able to receive the neuter surgery he needed. That care not only improves his health, but also helps prevent future wandering and keeps him safer in his new home.

Building a New Life Indoors

He has gained weight, his fur looks healthier, and he’s settling into life as a loved indoor cat. What started as a wandering cat posted in local Facebook groups turned into a second chance at a safe and happy home.

Stories like Astro’s are exactly why SPWA exists — to help pets get the care they need and support families who want to do the right thing for their animals.

Sometimes all it takes is a little help, a little patience, and a lot of love to change a life.

Astro’s journey shows that sometimes all it takes is a little help, patience, and love to change a life.
